How to Play Millionaire for Life in New Jersey
Choose five numbers from 1 to 58 and a Millionaire Ball between 1 and 5. Use Quick Pick or our number generator for totally random numbers. These are the universal how to play steps for the game, but New Jersey has a few unique caveats you should be aware of:
- Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to play.
- Multi-Draws: You can enter as many as 21 consecutive Millionaire for Life drawings in a row to guarantee three weeks of nightly excitement.
- Ticket Sales: They cut off at 9:15 CT, approximately one hour before the draw. Millionaire for Life tickets are $5 each.
How to Claim Prizes
Claiming Millionaire for Life prizes in New Jersey is simple, but the process differs depending on how you played. For instance, if you bought your ticket in New York and won a prize, you would have to claim it in New York. Claim prizes of different tiers in the manner described below:
- Up to $599.50: Claim prizes in this tier directly at an authorized New Jersey Lottery retailer. There are more than 6,500, so you can just head down to your local convenient store.
- $600-$9,999.50: Claim these prize sizes either by mail or in person at a New Jersey Lottery claim center. In both cases you will need to provide the signed valid ticket, a completed claim form, and photo ID (passport, driver’s license, Social Security information).
- $10,000 and above: These prizes must be claimed in person at a lottery claim center. You will need the signed valid ticket, a completed claim form, and photo ID (passport, driver’s license, Social Security information) for this too.
Claiming by Mail
If claiming by mail, send the appropriate details to:
New Jersey Lottery
Attn: Validations Unit
PO Box 041
Trenton, NJ 08625-0041
Claim Period
You have one year from the date of the drawing to file your claim before tickets expire. At Millionaire for Life, we recommend checking tickets carefully and starting the process sooner than later. It takes roughly six weeks from the date the claim is received for it to be processed and your money sent.
Taxes
State law mandates a 5% withholding rate for prizes above $10,000. For prizes between the latter and $500,000 the holding tax is 8%.
Cash or Annuity
In New Jersey, if you win either of the two jackpots you can opt for a lump sum cash option instead of the annuity described in the game. A cash lump sum for the main jackpot is about $18 million, and the cash option for the second prize is around $2,2 million.
Anonymity
Under a 2020-enacted state law, you can keep your identity anonymous in New Jersey if you win big, and you can do so indefinitely. This means your name, address, and person will not be released to the public or media unless you authorize it.
New Jersey 'for life' Game History
Millionaire for Life was created as a replacement to the popular and long-running Cash4Life, which was offered in The Garden State until February 21. Many New Jerseyans won Cash4Life during its run, including a player in Bergen County who won one of the final jackpots on February 19 by matching all five numbers and the Cash Ball.
Millionaire for Life has changed the game by introducing a bigger jackpot with better odds. New Jersey Lottery Executive Director James Carey expressed excitement at offering “our players an innovative and thrilling new game with Millionaire for Life.” He also expressed that speaking to players revealed that they want bigger prizes. “This game not only provides incredible winning potential but also enhances the overall experience for our players."
