In Australia, you can either play online or register for player cards which you then use when you buy tickets in-store. Your purchases are linked to your player account, so if you win a prize it can be automatically paid back to you. For larger amounts, the lottery operator will be able to see who has won and contact the lucky players to let them know and guide them through the rest of the claims process.
You can still claim prizes without having a lottery card – it just means that you have to check the results yourself. Remember to sign your ticket and keep it safe. Here is a rundown of what you need to do to get prizes of different amounts.
Non ‘For Life’ Prizes
If you win a prize in Divisions 3 to 8 - which are fixed awards rather than paid out monthly – the easiest way to claim your money is at a retail outlet. Simply take in your ticket and hand it over, and you will receive payment in return.
Each state has its own limit for how much can be claimed in-store, whether it is AU$1,500 in Queensland, $1,000 in New South Wales or $500 in Western Australia, but it is important to know that you can only collect prizes in the state where you played.
It is also possible to claim prizes by post if you can’t cash out at a retailer or at your state’s head office.
