How to Play Millionaire for Life in North Carolina
Players in North Carolina can take part in Millionaire for Life either through authorized retailers or online. The process is simple:
- Pick five numbers between 1 and 58.
- Select a Millionaire Ball number from 1 to 5.
- If you prefer not to choose numbers yourself, use the Quick Pick option to have them generated randomly.
- Decide how many future draws you want to enter, up to 21 consecutive drawings.
- Purchase your ticket before 10:15 PM Eastern Time if you’re buying it through a retail outlet, and 10:13 PM Eastern Time if you’re buying it online. This is when ticket sales close for the night’s draw.
Each play costs $5. The lottery occasionally runs promotional offers tied to its online account system, giving players extra value or promotional credits when purchasing tickets digitally.
Drawings for Millionaire for Life are held nightly at 11:15 PM ET. The top prize is awarded when a ticket matches all five main numbers plus the Millionaire Ball. Even without hitting the jackpot combination, several other prize tiers offer smaller payouts depending on how many numbers match.
If you buy your tickets online, cut-off times are slightly earlier (10:13 PM EDT) than when playing through a retailer.
How to Claim Prizes
If your ticket turns out to be a winner, the way you collect the prize depends on the amount won. Remember that lottery prizes must always be claimed in the same state where the ticket was purchased, so the information below applies specifically to North Carolina.
- $600 or less: Small prizes can typically be redeemed at licensed North Carolina Lottery retailers. If the ticket was purchased online, smaller wins are usually credited directly to your player account.
- More than $600: Larger prizes must be claimed by submitting the necessary paperwork to the lottery. This can be done either by mail or in person at a regional lottery office.
- Jackpots: Win either of the jackpots and you are required to make your claim in-person at the North Carolina Lottery Headquarters (address below) and present your winning ticket, winner claim form, and valid photo ID.
If sending a claim by mail, include:
- The signed winning ticket
- A completed winner claim form
- A photocopy of valid photo identification
Mail the documents to:

Many players choose to use certified or registered mail so they have confirmation that their ticket was delivered safely.
How long do I have to claim a prize if I win?
All North Carolina Lottery prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the draw date. This applies to all prizes, from the smallest payout to the top jackpot. Tickets not claimed within this period will expire and the winnings returned to lottery programs supporting education in the state.
Will taxes be withheld on my prize?
Yes. Lottery winnings in North Carolina are considered taxable income. For prizes over $5,000:
- Federal tax: 24% is automatically withheld.
- North Carolina state tax: 4.5% is withheld.
Additional federal or state taxes may apply depending on your overall income.
Can I stay anonymous if I win?
Generally, no. The North Carolina Education Lottery is required by law to release certain winner information, including name, city of residence, prize amount, and game won. Some winners use trusts or other legal entities to help maintain privacy, but full anonymity is not guaranteed.
North Carolina 'for Life' History
Before Millionaire for Life became available in North Carolina, the state offered Lucky for Life, a multi-state game with lifetime prizes that North Carolina introduced in 2014. During that time, several residents won second-tier prizes that paid $25,000 a year for life, highlighting the appeal of long-term income prizes in the state.
“For Life” games have become a key part of the North Carolina Education Lottery portfolio. A portion of every ticket sold supports public education in North Carolina, including scholarships, grants, and other education programs. For Millionaire for Life, this translates into dedicated funding for education initiatives with every ticket purchased, giving players the chance to win while also contributing to schools across the state.
