How to Play Millionaire for Life in West Virginia

Playing Millionaire for Life in the Mountain State is straightforward and designed to be enjoyable for both new and experienced players. To enter, simply choose five numbers from 1 to 58, then select a Millionaire Ball between 1 and 5. If you prefer not to choose your own numbers, the Quick Pick option will generate a random set for you.

You can also increase your chances by entering multiple consecutive draws. In West Virginia, players can typically add several future draws to a single ticket depending on retailer options.

Tickets are available through authorized retailers across the state via the West Virginia Lottery. Drawings take place every day at 11:15 PM ET, and each play costs $5.

How to Claim Prizes

Claiming a prize in West Virginia depends on how much you win, but the process is generally simple. Claim winnings up to $600 directly at any authorized lottery retailer by presenting your signed ticket. Mid-range prizes can be claimed either in person at a lottery office or by mail, while larger prizes require a visit to a West Virginia Lottery office.

Jackpot winners must claim in person and provide a signed ticket, completed claim form, valid photo identification, and their Social Security number.

No matter the prize amount, it’s important to sign the back of your ticket immediately to protect your claim.

Claiming by Mail
If you prefer to claim by mail, send your signed ticket along with the necessary documentation to:

West Virginia Lottery
P.O. Box 2067
Charleston, WV 25327

Claim Period

In West Virginia, you have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim your prize. Any winnings not claimed within this period are forfeited, so it’s best to check your numbers as soon as possible.

Taxes

West Virginia lottery winnings are subject to both federal and state taxes. Federal withholding is typically 24% for prizes over $5,000, while the state withholding rate is 6.5%. Any winnings of $600 or more must be reported to the IRS, and you will receive a W-2G form for tax purposes.

Anonymity

West Virginia does not allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. If you win, your name, hometown, and prize amount may be made public.

Cash Lump Sum Option

Winners of the top two prize tiers can choose between long-term annuity payments or a one-time cash option. The jackpot equates to $1 million per year for life, with a lump sum option of approximately $18 million. The second prize offers $100,000 per year for life, or a lump sum of around $2.2 million.

West Virginia 'for Life' History

Millionaire for Life was introduced to give players a chance at sustained financial security rather than just a one-time payout. Its signature “for life” structure guarantees winners at least 20 years of payments, even if they pass away, with remaining payments going to beneficiaries.

With strong odds, daily draws, and the appeal of long-term income, it has quickly become a popular choice for lottery players looking for more than a single jackpot moment.
