Your prize claiming process – and what documents you need to provide to do so – are dependant on the sum of the prize won. Here is a broad guide:
- Up to $599: Prizes can usually be claimed at any authorized Rhode Island lottery retailer. Most retailers pay these winnings in cash, depending on availability.
- $600 to $5,000: These prizes can be claimed by mail or in person through the Rhode Island Lottery. A completed claim form and valid ID are required.
- Over $5,000: Must be claimed in person at the Rhode Island Lottery headquarters at 1425 Pontiac Ave, Cranston, RI 02920, United States.
- Jackpot Prizes: Top “for life” prizes must be claimed in person at lottery headquarters, where winners can choose between annuity payments or a lump sum option.

Taxes
Lottery winnings in Rhode Island are subject to both federal and state taxes. The state applies its own withholding on larger prizes, and federal taxes will also be deducted depending on the amount won.
Winnings of $600 or more must be reported to the IRS, and prizes over certain thresholds will have taxes withheld automatically before payment. Winners should complete the appropriate tax forms (such as a W-2G) when claiming significant prizes. Find out more at our taxes page.
Anonymity
Rhode Island does not allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. The Rhode Island Lottery may publish details such as the winner’s name, city, and prize amount to maintain transparency and public trust in the lottery system.
Cash Lump Sum Option
For the top two prize tiers in Millionaire for Life, winners can choose between long-term annuity payments or a one-time cash payout:

Rhode Island 'for Life' History
Rhode Island has been part of the “for life” lottery format since joining Lucky for Life, offering players the chance to win long-term annuity prizes instead of traditional jackpots. Over the years, the game has built a strong following in the Ocean State thanks to its promise of steady, guaranteed income.
The format evolved further in February 2026, when Millionaire for Life was introduced across Rhode Island and multiple other jurisdictions. The updated game brought enhanced prize structures and renewed excitement, while continuing the concept of lifetime-style winnings.
Revenue generated by the Rhode Island Lottery supports a wide range of state programs. Proceeds help fund areas such as education, public safety initiatives, and other essential services that benefit Rhode Island residents.
Officials highlighted the appeal of the revamped game at launch, emphasizing its combination of large prizes and long-term financial security, giving players the opportunity to win income that can make a lasting difference for themselves and their families.
