How to Claim Prizes

To claim prizes in Virginia, you will need to consider the amount you win. The prize tier also determines what documentation you will need to make a valid claim.

  • Up to $600: Claim at any authorized Virginia Lottery retailer. Provide your signed winning ticket and proof of ID to claim.
  • $601 to $5,000: Claim at a retailer or by mail. Provide the signed winning ticket, completed claim form, and photographic ID whether claiming in person or by mail.
  • Over $5,000: Must be claimed in person at a Virginia Lottery customer service center or by mail (processing times may apply).

Virginia Lottery
P.O. Box 1254

Taxes

Lottery winnings are subject to both federal and state taxes. This includes a federal withholding tax of 24% for prizes over $5,000 and a Virginia state tax of 4%. Winnings of $600 or more are reported to the IRS, and you’ll receive a W-2G form for tax filing.

Anonymity

Virginia allows limited anonymity for lottery winners. Winners of $10 million or more can choose to remain anonymous. Smaller prize winners may have their name, city, and prize amount disclosed.

Cash Lump Sum Option

If you win a top prize, you can choose between annuity payments or a one-time cash option:

  • Jackpot: $1 million/year for life. Lump sum: approx. $18 million
  • Second Prize: $100,000/year for life Lump sum: approx. $2.2 million

Virginia 'for Life' Game History

Millionaire for Life was introduced to bring bigger, more exciting prizes with better odds than traditional lottery games. The standout feature is its “for life” annuity, guaranteeing a minimum of 20 years of payments, even if the winner passes away, along with continued payments to beneficiaries. This makes it one of the most appealing games for players seeking long-term financial security, not just a one-time windfall.
