Claim Period
Millionaire for Life prizes won in Oklahoma must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing taking place. After this period has passed, tickets expire and prizes are returned to the Oklahoma Lottery Commission to fund future prizes and promotions.
Taxes
Oklahoma lottery winnings are subject to tax withholding fees, including:
- Federal: The IRS requires a mandatory 24% federal withholding on all lottery winnings over $5,000.
- State: Oklahoma applies a 4.75% state tax withholding on lottery prizes.
- Total: Final tax rates may reach up to 37% federally, depending on your total annual income and tax bracket.
Anonymity
Oklahoma is not an anonymous state, unfortunately. Under Oklahoma Open Records Act, the lottery commission must make the winner's name and city of residence public. However, you can potentially gain an element of privacy by claiming prizes through a trust or legal entity like an LLC, though the name of the entity itself will still be public.
Cash Lump Sum Option
Oklahoma does offer a choice between cash and annuity. The cash option is typically 40-50% of the advertised jackpot amount, which is still an enormous sum. If you opt for this, you owe the full federal and state taxes on the entire amount in the year you receive it.
Multiple Winners
If multiple winners hit the jackpot, the jackpot prize is divided equally among all winners. If there are more than a certain number of winners, the ‘for life’ annuity is thrown out and the winners all given a portion of the prize as a one-time cash lump sum.
For lottery pools or groups, Oklahoma allows for multiple owners to claim a prize. It is highly recommended to have a written agreement beforehand to document how the winnings and tax liabilities will be shared among participants
Oklahoma 'for Life' Game History
Introduced as a replacement to the long-time popular Lucky for Life draw game that had been going since 2018, Millionaire for Life was launched in February 2026. The draw game has a top prize of $1 million for life and a second prize of $100,000 every year for life.
The goal of lottery authorities was to appeal to a younger demographic that prefers consistent "for life" payouts over massive one-time lump sums. A portion of ticket sales goes toward supporting Oklahoma's public education and other state-funded programs.
